WEDNESBURY TO BRIERLEY HILL METRO EXTENSION 

  • The Wednesbury to Brierley Hill extension will be a key part of the tram network across the region and will play a significant role in the regeneration and economic growth of the West Midlands. It will provide reductions to journey times between the centres of the region, particularly to Dudley town centre and Merry Hill. It will also provide step-free access to popular local attractions including Dudley Zoo and Castle, the Black Country Living Museum and Dudley Canal and Tunnel Trust.

  • Key Features: 11km metro line with up to 15 stops including street furniture, fast and frequent connections with Dudley Port Station, Dudley Interchange, the Waterfront and Merry Hill. 

  • Connecting Dudley with Birmingham in around 40 minutes, linking Wolverhampton to Dudley in around 30 minutes, allowing journeys between Birmingham and Brierley Hill in under an hour.

CASTLE HILL VISION - PHASE TWO

  • Improvements and investments to the castle, zoo and Castle Hill Woodland. Dudley Zoo and Castle is a collaboration between the zoo, the council and other stakeholders.

  • A New Vision document outlines eight key projects including: the castle; visitor and education facility; stores cavern mine; lodge; giraffe house; Tecton buildings; woodlands; and southern gateway.

  • External funding bids to be progressed on priority basis starting with castle based on urgency of need.

  • The vision also includes a new university centre at the foot of Castle Hill.

BLACK COUNTRY AND MARCHES INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 

  • £26.8m for purpose designed facilities to address regional Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) skills shortages. 

  • Teaching from level 4 to 7 (majority levels 4 to 5) – 2,000 students.

  • Bringing together further and higher education providers with employers.

  • Exploring  further higher level skills provision in Dudley via the Towns Fund.

PORTERSFIELD MAJOR

MIX-USE DEVELOPMENT

  • £82m of private investment to regenerate an area of central Dudley, offering a mix of retail and residential opportunities.

  • Creating up to 500 jobs

  • Up to 400 apartments including student accommodation

  • Potential to include shops, restaurants, bars and offices.

BLACK COUNTRY LIVING MUSEUM - FORGING AHEAD

  • The single largest capital development project in the Museum’s history.

  • Forging Ahead is an exciting scheme that will take BCLM’s story into the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. 

  • The project will deliver a new visitor welcome area, dedicated learning centre, and industrial quarter and town centre set in the 1940s-60s.

THE DUNCAN EDWARDS

LEISURE CENTRE

  • A New build ‘Sport England Option D’ Leisure Centre on Flood Street in central Dudley and refurbishment of Halesowen and Stourbridge (Crystal) leisure centres. To set the standard of build quality and public realm for neighbouring developments.

DUDLEY TRANSPORT INTERCHANGE

  • A world class multimodal facility with improved waiting and interchange facilities with enhanced real-time passenger information providing:

  • Enhanced safety for all users.

  • Increased patronage and passenger satisfaction.

  • Improved cycle parking facilities.

  • Improved retail and ticketing offer.

  • Segregation of passenger and vehicular movements.

  • Reduced environmental impact.

VERY LIGHT RAIL NATIONAL INNOVATION CENTRE

  • A £28m project to provide a unique research facility for the development of Very Light Railway (VLR) technologies and projects.

  • The project brings back into use a redundant stretch of railway to support the National Innovation Centre.

  • Works include: a retaining wall;  a 2.2km test track; a 5600m2 new building.
